Workshop on “Working with Perpetrators of Violence Against Older Women”

Older women are among the most vulnerable groups affected by gender-based violence and often face additional barriers when seeking support and safety. The violence they experience may be committed by an intimate partner, but also by adult children, other family members, or caregivers.

At the same time, working with older perpetrators of intimate partner violence against older women within perpetrator programmes presents specific challenges, while guidance and support for addressing the needs of this target group remain limited.

This two-day capacity-building workshop explored the dynamics of violence in later life, the intersections between age and gender-based violence, and offers a framework for ensuring the safety of victims in the context of perpetrator work. It also provided guidance on adapting the perpetrator programme, from intake to follow-up, to meet the needs of this often-overlooked population.

Participants learnt how to:

  • Identify violence against older women and screen for key risk and vulnerability factors
  • Integrate a better understanding of aging and its impact on gender-based violence (GBV)
  • Understand and address ageism, as well as multiple and intersecting forms of discrimination
  • Differentiate between various types of perpetrators of violence against older women
  • Adjust your programme to effectively work with older perpetrators of IPV
  • Adapt the intake phase when working with older perpetrators of intimate partner violence (IPV)
